Flooring boat ?

tigrig	I couldn't find marine plywood so I am using outdoor plywood. I was going to use treated but the indoor outdoor carpet glue said not to use on treated plywood ....Is there anything I can treat the wood with that carpet glue will adhere to? Thanks for your help, Mike	2002-07-18
outonbizniz	I'm not quite to this point yet in my restoration, but, I am planning to encapsulate AC exterior grade plywood (with 2 coats of wood preservative) with fiberglass. Many others have done this and gotten carpet to glue down. (I know marine grade would be better...I cannot justify the additional expense since I'll be glassing it anyway.	2002-07-18
blifsey	You can use exterior grade ply but put on a coat or 2 of epoxy. Also, you can lay down a layer of fiberglass on the top side. Carpet should stick fine to this. Many folks like the exterior over PT because of the quality of the wood and moisture content (PT will shrink/warp/check/etc). Even if you use marine ply, you need to coat with epoxy. In a thread a few months back, it was recommended to use to layers of exterior luan instead of 1 layer ply because you could overlap joints to make it like 1 big sheet. BL...	2002-07-18
Firewood	Next step for my boat is laying a new floor. I'm going to "hot coat" a good grade plywood. I was told how to do this by several boat repair/builders. What you do is thin the resin down with acetone, and add paraffin wax which is melted when the mix is heated. The wax floats to the top when the resin is rolled on to the plywood, sealing the resin from the air allowing it cure completely. I was told that this is very important no matter if you spring for marine grade or not. The plywood soaks up so much resin that if you just did resin/fiberglass right of the bat you'd be screwed. Like I said this is the next step in my project. I will keep everyone posted. I do plan on cutting and dry fitting the wood first, and laying out hatch locations.	2002-07-20
Bob_VT	Non-slip automotive bed liner will also seal any plywood up. I am pretty sure you would be able to glue carpet to it also. Just a thought... Bob	2002-07-21
Hawkeye1	Firewood, Those boat builders were talking about polyester resin. I would use nothing but epoxy resin. With epoxy you don't have to worry about the air and there for don't need the wax. The epoxy will soak in a seal the wood 10 times better then the polyester stuff or reg boat yard resin. I used about 35 gal of epoxy in my project formula and found a good source of inexpensive epoxy that works the same as the most expensive stuff.
